A training ground for life – ‘How exercise training can help us in everyday life’

Train for Life

Developing a regular training pattern in the gym or with any sport has its challenges. The challenges we face within our training are like teachers (the kind that are cruel to be kind). They teach us discipline to build resilience,  to overcome the struggles and to grow.

Throughout my time in regular fitness training, since I was young, I have always found these lessons I have learnt and the development gained has helped me tremendously in life to overcome any challenges that life brings. Without this as a basis I think I would have found these far more difficult.

Without the discipline built in the gym I may likely not have learnt to do the same in other areas of life, it is certain that it has helped in many ways. Regular Training in whichever form you choose also builds your self-confidence and self-belief, I have seen people’s confidence transform from exercising regularly and it also happened to me. Self-confidence and self-belief are two things that without which we will struggle very much in many areas of life. Regular training is in no way a magic pill for this because there are many elements to it, but it certainly helps a lot.

The Energy and Focus you also gain from your training will also help in all other areas of life, whether you are working or studying , you will be able to think much clearer and feel much better due to the increase in energy and concentration. As a result you will be able to get far more done in a shorter space of time, who wouldn’t want this?:)

Because exercise training is initially quiet difficult and to form a regular training pattern takes discipline this builds a strength of mind, we have to learn to persist and be disciplined with our training to reach the results we want to achieve. Persistence is important in training to achieve our goals, without it we would not get there or keep going at all. This is the same with any goal in life, if we do not have persistence we will not get there. The good thing is persistence can be built and exercise training is the perfect training ground to do this.

We always start off small and build up, therefore we learn to adapt and progress  from there you get stronger and stronger. You can apply this principle to any goal and it will then develop your persistence muscle because this way you have broken your large goal down and you then build up from there. Each step has a reward and self belief gets stronger, you will keep going to get to the next step (as long as you want it enough) and so build persistence from within. From there you can then use this strength when you need to, for any goal or task that requires it. You will always keep going because in training you have to.

‘As you train your body, you train your mind and your mind is the master your life.’ ~ M.L.Adams

Your Health

Feel Healthy

It is your health that is your real true beauty in life

So easily given and then more easily taken, it is the real true gift

Value it with your life, for it depends on it so

There are many a people who aren’t even fortunate enough to know

Always remember the real true gift,

It is right there within you; don’t wait for it to fly by

Many a people have done so and then they realise

That their real true gift was right before their eyes

Many a true scholar have told us these words before

It is now time we listen, for its more important than before

Our world is filled with guises that hide us from this gift

The only way to truly know is from how you feel inside

So stand up for your life and be true to yourself

Don’t hide from your health it is your real gift of wealth

For once you really have it, then you will truly know

That the real gift of life

Is right there before you,

If you  only choose to let it be so

~ M.L.Adams

Positive Focus

Having a positive focus is essential in training. Firstly in getting started and aiming towards your targets and then to keep going. To help you stay positive on your journey, here are my top 3 tips;

1. Focus on what you can do and build upon it; doing this will give you confidence and allow for building up more on this positivity.

2. Recognise your personal milestones and then set new ones at a pace that works and feels right for you.

3. Keep it fun yet challenging, the right balance will ensure you maintain your joy and motivation.

Most of all stay positive and enjoy the journey.

Happy Training 🙏🙂💫

Adaptability & Diversity in Fitness Training

We all have different needs and with that different abilities, then as we all have the importance of maintaining health and fitness, how do we find what is right for us?

Within most forms of training if not all to some degree, there are adaptions and modifications.

The main guidance I would give is;

Find what you love, follow your body and adapt where you need.

Whatever way of fitness you follow , first find what you enjoy, find what feels right to you and then any adapt as you need.

For example in building strength, you can start with resistance bands and then ligh free weights to build up. Taking guidance where necessary.

There are many different ways, there’s always a way, and you can always find yours.

To lots of joy on your Journey 🙏😊💫

Technique or Spirituality..?

“Jeet kune do ultimately is not a matter of petty technique but of highly developed personal spirituality and physique.”

~ Bruce Lee

Jeet kune do developed by Bruce Lee takes us on a journey, Bruce Lee also stated that Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is a process not a product, one that for many becomes a personal journey of discovery.

What he meant by the quote in the picture is open to interpretation as many things, personally I have seen it as one of opening to all possibilities where we then realise how different each moment is and the beauty and bliss that it brings.

The opportunity to develop in mind and body and find all the ways that suit us personally, discovering what works and what doesn’t and finding our way within it.

For JKD to be only about technique or to be a product would have made it confining which was not his purpose at all. Personal liberation being one of his main goals, Bruce Lee’s own journey took this path of continual discovery and refinement.

This way of being then becomes a part of all aspects of life allowing one to develop deeply within their own self in mind, body and spirituality.

Realising that all exists in this present moment of beauty and bliss takes one beyond technique being in all that is. 🙏💛

Working with Change

Change is a natural part of life, in every moment things are always changing. Yet we can often try to keep things the same.

What if instead we were to work with change, allowing it it to happen and going with it instead.

For example when we listen to our bodies, what may have felt good a year ago may not do so now. What If instead of resisting this we work with our bodies and do what feels right in the now, working with it instead.

This is not to say that our work or efforts should not be challenging in some way but that we work with our nature and natural changes, just as nature does itself.

As a tree grows it has to work with the ground it’s in and the changing weather that appears naturally.

Just like this, we too have to work with the way we are and the environment we are in. As a result we will adapt and grow naturally with it.

Work with change

Grow and adapt naturally 🙏💕

Freedom of Movement

Having freedom of movement within our training is highly beneficial not only for our bodies but also our minds.

By staying open and having freedom and looseness in our movements like that of a dancer we will begin to notice how this positively affects the way we think and feel.

When our joints are more free and open and our bodies move easier, our minds reflect this and vice versa.

If this sounds like something that you also want or need, here are some ways you can increase the freedom of movement in your training.

  • Stretch Daily
  • Loosening/mobilising exercises
  • Bodyweight training
  • Being adaptable in your training methods
  • Lessen any force and increase softness in your training
  • Adequate rest and recovery

These are some of the ways I have found to be helpful, and as with anything it is always a work in progress.

Below is a short video I created of some loosening exercises you can add to your warm up/cool down routine to help improve your freedom of movement.

For any further advice please get in touch.

Enjoy the journey, enjoy training 🙂💛🙏

Building Up

Building up in our training is very much an individual thing, however there are a few helpful rules you can apply to assist the process.

  1. Gradual progression; take your training step by step and listen to your body, as you gradually add more weight and variation to your exercises.
  2. Pace your training; remember to get adequate rest days, at least 1 per week for recovery and to alternate your training so you’re not overtraining the same muscle groups. Recovery is as important as the work itself.
  3. Stay focused; staying focused on your path of progression is important and to do this you have to keep it interesting. Vary your workouts, keep your favourite music on and keep track of your progress.

Stay focused , stay motivated, build up step by step 💪💫

Honour your progress

It’s important always to honour your progress and all you’ve put it in to your training.

There are several ways you can do this;

  1. Keep a record of your progressions.
  2. Reward yourself when you achieve milestones.
  3. Adapt as progress, enjoying the process.

The journey is where the joy is as well as keeping track of your milestones along the way, this is important, so you can really see how far you’ve come.

Enjoy the process and progress 🙏💛😊

3 Ways to Overcome Plateaus

Hitting plateaus in training is inevitable and a regular occurrence when training consistently and regularly. Even where we are gradually progressing with techniques and rep range these can still occur. However there is always a way to overcome.

Here are 3 steps to help you overcome them.

  1. The first thing is to recognise them and address them as quickly as possible, before becoming stagnant or bored. Then believe in your mind you can and will overcome this plateau, not allowing it to defeat you.
  2. Then break the mould of your training and diversify a little, this is as important for your mind as well as your body as its important to feel free and joyful in your training.
  3. Then listen to your body, feel what’s working and what isn’t and add or takeaway what you need. This also will apply to your diet as that can contribute significantly.

I hope you find these tips helpful and are able to apply where you need. Remember there is always a way. 💫

Most of all enjoy your training, stay happy and free 🙏🙂

There are no limits only plateaus and you must not stay there you must go beyond them

~ Bruce Lee
